When it comes to experience
with copy write every year teachers go over what is and is not plagiarism. The
concept of it is quite simple however without quotes or proper citations it is
considered plagiarism. As a teacher especially one who wants to work with kids
k-3 it is important to make the ground rules for plagiarism. I would not necessarily
deal with kids who are plagiarizing more just teaching them the foundation of
not copying someone else work and calling it their own. In my classroom I would
just highlight to kids to be proud of their own works so they won't wan to copy
others work due to the fact they will be so proud of their own.
Three issues that I would
challenge are the common core, politics, and controversial issues. So for
common core I would follow the guidelines given by the school in order to
suffice with that however then I would collaborate with teachers school wide
and county wide to make sure that across the board my students would be able to
jut into another classroom and flourish. Politics, now being in an elementary
setting this issues won't be huge except for talking about the president and
his job in our country. I would also make sure that the kids know that all
opinions are valid and that we don't go against anyone else believes.
Controversial issues would be looked at similarly to politics in the
manner that there is no wrong or right at this age I believe that it is
imperative to make the foundation that everyone is entitled to their own
opinions.
I agree with your statement that teachers need to teach children that discussions are a place where students can share what they believe and no one has a correct opinion. This teaches acceptance and also offers students different perspectives other than their own. I like how your idea would teach students how to respectfully disagree with students and also evoke an interest in what is being talked about.
ReplyDeleteHi Emily, I really liked how you said that as a teacher you would want kids to be proud of their own work so they would not want to copy students work in the future. I think this is so important as teachers to instill that sense of confidence in our students. Giving students the confidence that they can do work on their own would lessen the amount of copying they would do however, some assignments require things like sources to backup one's ideas so it is also important to teach students how to correctly cite material as well.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting blog post, you considered many angles that I did not, which I enjoyed. I think that it is hard to say that K-3 won't be plagiarizing, especially the generation of digital natives that are being raised, however I do agree that you will need to teach them the rules right from the start. I also thought about your statement of teaching students about controversial issues and that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. While this is true, you will likely have an inbox full of parental complaints for teaching their young child about controversial issues that they have decided to shelter their child from until they are older. If you do truly plan to do this, be very careful with how much you say on a topic, in order to maintain a safe classroom free of bias.
